Late last month, we had an opportunity to visit a new Canadian province - Manitoba! We've been trying to go for years but things never worked out. I'll be honest, Winnipeg often gets a bad rep for being a snowy city but summer is completely different and there was a lot that we loved!

Manitoba For First Timers
When most people think about Manitoba, they conjure up snowy images and an unrelenting freeze. However, as we'd experience, it's appropriate to say that the grass is greener on the other side.
Our 4 days were quite the whirlwind but also showed that if you have a long weekend, you could totally pull someting like this off.
Winnipeg
Nicknamed, "Canada's Middle Child", Tourism Winnipeg actually built an entire campaign around this, which is brilliant. Embracing what it's like to be the middle child, and also literally being in the geographic middle of Canada, we got to see that there's so much more to the city than its other nickname "WinterPeg".
Highlights:
- Canadian Museum for Human Rights - Thought-provoking and a world-class museum that every human being should visit.
- Assiniboine Park Zoo - Short of going to Churchill, it was pretty sweet seeing seals swimming around the glass tunnel and their massive polar bear habitat.
- The Leaf - It's Singapore's Vortex Rainfall meets Montreal's Biodome. Truly impressive indoor greenspace.
- Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival - We did not know that this was one of the largest in North America. We loved the atmosphere and that was just the free performances at the park. It's worth building your trip around this!
- The Forks - This is Winnipeg's waterfront and such a well-rounded space whether on the Winnipeg Waterways Tour, The Forks Market, and all of the space towards the Human Rights museum.
- Sea Bears - We're lucky to have the Toronto Raptors but there's something so fun as a visitor to see the locals embrace a Canadian pro basketball league (CEBL), wholeheartedly.
- deer+almond - The culinary scene is Winnipeg isn't talked about enough as we had an incredible meal at this restaurant that combines local Manitoban ingredients with a creative international flair. You have to eat here!
What stood out: The theme that weaved throughout our 2 days was just how strong of a community-feel there was to everywhere we went in the summer. From the garden summer concerts, Sea Bears, local concerts, Fringe Fest, locals come out to play, and we loved that!
Manitoba
When we travel, we love being able to combine city treats with an outdoor retreat (hey that rhymes!) and our mini getaway to Eastern Manitoba to experience a side to the province that most visitors rarely ever get to see - one filled with lakes, Precambrian rocky trails, waterfalls, and surprising ruins.
Highlights:
- Float & Paddle - Along the Pinawa channel you can rent tubes from these guys and spend 3 hours getting a nice tan while letting the gentle current carry you downstream. This was our favourite activity.
- Pinawa Dam - It's rare to be able to get up-close to the ruins of an early 20th century marvel.
- Wild Skies Resort - We've never stayed in a DIY-style glamping site before but it was nice being able to do some kayaking, s'mores on our private firepit, cook using a pizza clay oven, play lawn games, sauna, and have our own stargazing tent all in one night.
- Whiteshell Provincial Park - An expansive park that is really a collection of great trails and access to waterfalls and rapids.
What stood out to us: Yes the roads are quite flat in this part of the country but once you get into the provincial parks, there's a lot to do. Best part was that all of this was only 1.5 hours away from Winnipeg.
